Bio
Janette Hayhoe's oil paintings seek to pay homage to the classical skills of painting while focusing on the 'everydayness' of contemporary life. Janette has a MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, a BA from Queen's University and studied classical realism at the Ecole Albert Dufois in France. This approach based on careful observation and understanding of nature is applied to a variety of subject matter, working predominantly from life in the genres of still life, figurative and landscape painting.
Artist Statement
The human experience is at once both personal and universal. We carry with us memories of places and experiences that form the essence of who we are. Through the realization of common experience and understanding, we become conscious of our common humanity. Visual images have the power to evoke memory and psychological responses that tie us to the world.
The act of painting calls for an attentiveness to what is often overlooked. My process of working predominantly from life, demands an intimacy with the subject. I am captivated by light describing form and the transformative effect it has on everyday subjects.
Much of my work focuses on domesticity, the everyday spaces and objects that surround us. The inherent paradoxes that exist within this realm can evoke various emotional states which I aim to explore. Through my paintings I seek to open a space for contemplation and self-reflection.
